While the plot is well-rounded and Roonie’s journey feels realistic, the pacing of the book makes the growth of the character feel too rushed. Roonie’s fears and emotions are felt through the pages and serve as an invitation to think of the things that scare us the most and how important it is to share and confront those fears. Room 555 is narrated in first person and succeeds in putting the reader squarely inside the protagonist’s mind and heart. AT THE AGE OF FORTY-ONE, I am returning to school and having to think of myself as what my French textbook calls “a true debutant.” After paying my tuition, I was issued a student ID, which allows me a discounted entry fee at movie theaters, puppet shows, and Festyland, a far-flung amusement park that advertises with billboards picturing a cartoon stegosaurus sitting in a canoe and eating what appears to be a ham sandwich. ![]() ![]() Structurally, they can be simple, but the ornamentation, the act of retelling, is often where the magic occurs. I think it's because most fairytales, honed over the years, work so very well. And there, many people obviously thought, they needed to stay.īut they don't stay there. The stories that people had told each other to pass the long nights had become children's tales. By the third edition, Rapunzel tells the witch that she is lighter to pull up than the prince was, and the twins, when they turn up, turn up out of nowhere. Rapunzel no longer let it slip that she had been meeting the prince by asking the witch why her belly had swollen so badly that her clothes would not fit (a logical question, given that she would soon be giving birth to twins). The Grimms responded to market pressure and bowdlerised enthusiastically. And they were surprised when the adults who bought their collections of fairytales to read to their children began to complain about the adult nature of the content. They were primarily collectors and philologists, who assembled their tales as part of a life's work that included massive volumes such as German Legends, German Grammar and Ancient German Law. ![]() ![]() Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, to pick two writers who had a lot to do with the matter, did not set out to collect the stories that bear their name in order to entertain children. A strand of violent, psychologically complex Westerns that appeared in the 1950s, for example, captures both changing attitudes toward the settlement of the West and the treatment of Native Americans while channeling the spirit of a country still recovering from a devastating World War. The Western is a vital genre with the habit of reinventing itself every few years that doubles as a way to talk about America’s history while reflecting on its present. Westerns thrived in the silent era, and though the genre’s popularity has ebbed and flowed ever since - largely fading from view in the ’80s but enjoy several resurgences in succeeding decades - it’s never threatened to fade away. The history of movie Westerns more or less begins with the end of the Old West itself. ![]() It’s probably safe to add the Western to that list, too, even if - like jazz and comics - the Western has roots around the globe and has since been adopted in many lands. For me, the historical fiction story edged out the present day story, but not by much. The other shows present day Cuba as Marisol returns there to discover her roots and uncover the secrets of the grandmother who raised her. It follows Eliza, born into privilege, and part of Cuba's high society as she falls in love with a revolutionary. The first is a glimpse into old Cuba, corrupt and politically tense. There are two storylines, one in the late 1950s and the other present day. This book is atmospheric and subtly draws you in with wonderful characters and beautiful descriptions of Cuba. It's about the internal strife and conflicts in revolutionary Cuba but it's also a love story filled with family drama. ![]() |
